Why Cyprus Is the Best Getaway (From Someone Who Goes Twice a Year)

I’m half Greek Cypriot, and Cyprus isn’t just a holiday destination for me, it’s somewhere I return to again and again. I go twice a year, and it never loses its magic. Partly because of the island itself, and partly because my nan and grandad live in Larnaca, which has become my version of home away from home.

Larnaca: Familiar, Easy, and Always Comforting

Larnaca is where I settle into holiday mode properly. Finikoudes is my go-to! The palm-lined promenade, the sea always within sight, and that feeling that nothing needs to be rushed. If you’re there, The Meeting Pub is a must. They do the best piña colada, and I will stand by that statement forever.

The Church of St Lazarus is right in the middle of Larnaca and definitely worth a visit. It’s been there since the 9th century and is built over the tomb of Lazarus, who’s said to have come to Cyprus after being brought back to life and became the island’s first bishop. You can actually go downstairs and see the tomb, which is pretty surreal. Even if you’re not religious, it’s one of those places that makes you stop and appreciate how much history the island really has.

If you want something a little more lively, Mackenzie Beach is just down the road. It’s perfect for plane spotting. Watching flights come in low over the water never gets old and it’s lined with stylish beach clubs that feel fun without being over the top.

On the other side, you’ve got Dhekelia Beach, which is quieter, cheaper, and just as beautiful. It’s ideal if you want the same clear water and calm atmosphere without the buzz, proof that Cyprus doesn’t make you choose between value and beauty.

Hidden Favourites and Beach Bars

One of my favourite spots on the island is Kalifi in Paralimni. It’s hands down one of the most beautiful beach bars I’ve been to. The views are unreal, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it’s the kind of place you go “just for one drink” and end up staying for hours. If you’re heading to that side of the island, I can’t recommend it enough.

Paphos: Tourist, Yes. But Worth It

Paphos is often described as the heart of Cyprus’s tourist scene, and honestly, it earns that title. The port is a must for a walk around, especially with a pistachio gelato in hand. There are so many incredible hotels lining the waterfront, and the whole area feels lively without being chaotic.

There’s also a walking strip along the harbour, which is perfect for an early morning run, if that’s your thing.

If you head inland, the vibe changes completely. Up in the mountains, you’ll find traditional coffee shops and restaurants where locals sit for hours, smoking, talking, and drinking ouzo and eating meze.

Two go-to restaurants in Paphos are definitely Duomo if you fancy a change from Greek. Hands down the best Italian I’ve ever had, with prawns the size of your head!

For a classic meze with a view, I’d highly recommend Melitzia Tavern in Tala. Go at sunset and you absolutely won’t regret it.

One place I would recommend is Episkopi village. It’s small, hilly, and quaint, but the views are absolutely stunning. If you want to experience Cyprus as Cypriots do, it’s well worth the visit.

Practical Perks (Especially for Brits)

Another huge plus: Cyprus is incredibly easy to navigate. They drive on the same side of the road as the UK, and the road markings are in English, which makes renting a car stress-free, even if you’re not the most confident driver abroad. I won’t lie though, the Greeks driving is a little different than ours, so just be cautious!

The Bakery That Will Ruin All Other Desserts

If you do one thing while you’re there, please for the love of God, go to Zorbas Bakery. And when you’re there, get the galaktoboureko. If you like custard and syrup, it’s bloody beautiful, mate. Life-changing stuff.

Final Thoughts

Cyprus sometimes gets a bad reputation. It’s about 4.5 hours away, and people underestimate it. But it’s so worth it. The island has countless incredible spots, from lively promenades to quiet villages, and it suits so many different types of trips. Whether you want rest, good food, beautiful beaches, or a slower pace of life, Cyprus delivers every single time. I’ll always recommend it.

I could honestly go on, but I could be here for hours so I’ll leave it to another post.

Ciao for now…
