Travel and Self-Discovery: Do You Need to Go Far to Find Yourself?
For a long time, I thought the solution to feeling lost was a plane ticket. New country, new me. A full personality reset at 30,000 feet. But somewhere between endlessly scrolling through travel photos and never actually booking anything, I started to wonder… do you really need to go far to find yourself?
I think when something bad happens in our lives, or we hit a rough patch, our first instinct is to run or hide. There’s something very tempting about getting away from the place tied to those heavy feelings. Leaving behind the streets, rooms, and routines that remind you of a painful time and replacing them with new scenery and new memories feels much easier than staying put and changing how you see the place that hurt you.
When my Nan passed away, all I could think was: I need to get as far away from here as possible. Life felt loud, heavy, and completely overwhelming. I was this close to booking a trip to South Korea, which now sounds absolutely wild for me to do in that headspace, even though I’d still love to visit one day. The idea of just uprooting your entire life on a whim is kind of crazy… but also, for some people, it genuinely works.
And I do think some people need to get away.
Circumstances matter. What someone has been through, what they’re carrying, and what staying might cost them emotionally is different for everyone. There’s a reason “you only live once” gets thrown around so much. Sometimes choosing yourself really does mean packing a bag and going.
That said, I don’t think staying is the “boring” or weaker option. You can stick around and figure things out too. You can heal in familiar places. You can grow without leaving. And honestly, sometimes all it takes is a small change, a day trip, a new routine or a fresh perspective to remind you that life still has things to offer. It doesn’t hurt to see something new, even if it’s closer to home.
Maybe the real lesson is that travel isn’t about escaping who you are, but about giving yourself space to breathe. You don’t need to go halfway across the world to find yourself-but sometimes going somewhere, anywhere, reminds you that you’re still here, still curious, still capable of moving forward. And whether that journey is across the globe or just a little deeper into yourself, both are just as valid.
Ciao for now…
